Aromatherapy Candles - A guide September 28, 2021 16:32
What are aromatherapy candles? How do they work and what can you use them for? In this blog post we share our views about aromatherapy candles and how they can benefit mind, body and soul.
What are aromatherapy candles?
Definitions vary, but in our view, aromatherapy candles are natural, plant based candles made with essential oils. In terms of aromatherapy benefits, the key ingredients here are the essential oils. Essential oils are typically steam distilled from plants or the resin from trees to create a concentrated liquid. Aromatherapy is the practice of using essential oils to improve health and wellbeing. It is these oils that give candles their aromatherapy benefits.
How do aromatherapy candles work?
To answer that, it's important to step back for a moment and consider how aromatherapy more broadly is used. Aromatherapy is widely used around the world in general healthcare. Surprised? Well, if you are thinking that aromatherapy is some kind of alternative to 'proper' healthcare, think again. Things have come along way. Aromatherapy is used in all kinds of treatment - from maternity wards to oncology units. It is regularly studied in the research departments of leading universities and is gaining recognition in terms of the benefits it can provide to the overall wellbeing and happiness not just of us, but even for our pets!
Aromatherapy candles work by infusing the wax with the essential oils. As they burn, they release a vapour which you then inhale. It is worth noting that essential oils are concentrated, natural oils - very different from strong smelling, synthetic fragrance oils. There should be no adverse reaction from natural oils - for example, no headaches.
Plant derived oils... with a touch of magic...
Every essential oil has its own particular scent and qualities. We know so much about essential oils, but there is also some things we don't know about them. Every essential oil is made up of lots of different compounds. However, each one also has a number of smaller 'trace' compounds, many of which remain unidentified. It is perhaps these unknowns that give essential oils their slightly magical, mysterious connotations. Essential oils are complex, versatile, easily absorbed by the human body and quite honestly, fascinating. Just like the plants from which they are derived, there is always something to learn from them; something to marvel at and draw inspiration from.
So, with all that in mind, how do you go about choosing the right aromatherapy candle for you?
Luckily, humans have been using essential oils for centuries, so there is a lot of knowledge out there about the effectiveness of some scents versus others. In developing our own range of candles, we have extensively researched our choice of essential oils - not just in terms of their benefits, but we look closely at how each essential oil is produced in order to create candles that include high quality ingredients, responsible sourced.
Here is a rundown of three of our most popular blends and their particular aromatherapy benefits:
Rosemary & Lavender Aromatherapy Candle: Rosemary is used in aromatherapy to create focus and clarity. It aids memory enhancement and can ease headaches and migraines. Lavender is well known for its ability to ease tension, stress and anxiety. Together the blend is clarifying and relaxing. It is ideal to burn while working away in a home office or undertaking tasks that where a sense of quiet focus is required. It is also highly restorative - perfect for unwinding after a busy day.
Pelargonium & Grapefruit Candle: Pelargonium graveolens otherwise known as Geranium is often used in aromatherapy to balance emotions and hormones, specifically for women. It stimulates a calming response and can also be effective in reducing feelings of stress. In case you haven't come across the scent before, it is unmistakably floral - I tend to think of it as smelling like a 'green' rose - fresher, younger and more green somehow than a traditional rose smell. Grapefruit is used to respond to physical and mental exhaustion. For us, those difficult times when you are feeling hormonal are compounded when you are tired. So combining essential oils that respond to both issues just felt like a logical thing to do. The result is a fresh, citrusy floral mood-boosting scent.
Sandalwood & Cedarwood Candle (woodsmoke): Sandalwood has been used in incense, medicine and perfume for thousands of years. Cleopatra is said to have been particularly fond of this particular oil. Sandalwood is produced in India and Indonesia and its chemical make up has ensured it has enjoyed a long association with yoga; used during practice for it's grounding, sedative properties. A tonic of an oil, we blend it with cedarwood, another tree derived essential oil which similar to sandalwood in both its use and chemical composition, has a tradition linked to prayer and religion. A restorative oil, cedarwood is also grounding, helping to create a peaceful, restful environment. It is a 'warm' scent, helping to promote feelings of wellbeing, stability and self esteem.
Checklist when choosing an aromatherapy candle:
If you are new to aromatherapy candles or looking to try a new scent, use this handy checklist to help choose the right candle for you:
- Work from the inside out: Decide how you'd like to benefit from the candle, and what you are looking for - perhaps you want to introduce a little more calm to your day. Or you are looking for a greater sense of emotional balance. Consider what is important to you first and foremost.
- Do your research: Choose a candle that is made with natural ingredients and critically essential oils. Fragrance oils offer no natural aromatherapy benefits.
- Get some advice: Scent is so personal. If you are buying online, have a chat with the company making and selling the aromatherapy candles. They should be happy to provide recommendations on what might be appropriate for you. They can also confirm the ingredients they use and how the candles are made.
